after replacing the MAF sensor car is hard to start and idle

i replaced the MAF sensor, the car is hard to start and lacks power and it sounds like it is popping thru the intake why?
What makes this problem better or worse?

Hello, Backfiring through the intake indicates a timing issue. Combustion occurs before the intake valve is closed. Why was the MAF replaced? did you replace it with the original type?
