how do I change the digital display on a/c control unit from metrics to standard

According to the owner's manual (do a web search: 1998 BMW 323i owner's manual and you'll find it if you don't have one!), you can press the "scale selection key" to choose metric versus English. Note that this might be "km/miles" or something like that. This would be on the on-board computer controls.
