Car randomly shuts off while driving.

I have a 1997 BMW E36 318is. This has happened multiple times, I'm driving normally and then I see the battery and oil light come on and the car loses all power, power steering goes out and brakes become hard. I pull over and try to turn it on again, the engine cranks but won't start. After I wait some time and try to start it again the car starts and drives. What could be causing this?
