If your warning light for the charging system came on, it truly means you have a problem in your charging system, with the alternator or wiring to and from it. The battery serves to start your vehicle, and then also stabilize the power to all the vehicle's operating electronics like the engine's processor and all accessories. If your charging system / alternator has failed, the battery will not be charged, the vehicle's electronics will suffer eventually with the degradation of the battery.
I put fully charged battery in just to check if got power. When id connect neg cable horn would blow and all interior lights were blinking then i started to smell wires getting hot so unhooked battery and scared to hook back up.
The anti theft system was going off, which caused the horn to blow and lights to blink. With a proper key and / or remote, this can be disabled. I don't know what to say about wires that smell hot. Start by deactivating the alarm when the battery is hooked up and move forward from there.
