I have noticed my car getting a little warm when it set running on a real hot day. I checked the coolant level and add some. Then the other day it over heated and had no water flow. Heater blow cold and I could stick my finger in the radiator without being burnt. I changed the thermostat hoping it was stuck closed. Still over heated, I was going to change the water pump so I drained the radiator and then decided it was going to be a big job so I filled the radiator back up and pulled the car out of the garage. Now it is not over heating. I have only drove it around close to the house and let it idle but it seem to be fine. Could it have air in the system? Or can the water pump be intermittent?

The water pump doesn't go bad intermittently, the thermostat could stick intermittently but you have replaced that.. Air in the cooling system could cause poor heater operation and over heating. Water pump don't go bad on the Acura unless it is the source of a leak. The Acura Tl is pretty good of bleeding the air out once the electric fan has cycled on and off a few times and the system is topped up. The cooling system may have a leak. The way an automotive shop would locate the leak is by removing the radiator cap and attaching an adapter that screws on in place of the radiator cap. Something that looks like a bicycle pump with a pressure gauge attached to it is used to "pump up" pressure to simulate pressure generated when the cooling system is at operating temperature, the leak is then found sometimes it is obviously leaking from a coolant hose or cracked housing, failed gasket or water pump, sometimes the engines cooling system needs to be inspected from below or inspected using a mirror and flash light. A mildly blown head gasket could also cause this.
also check to see if the driver side fan is coming on. I have to tap it with a rubber mallet every few days to get it to turn. With it off, the temperature goes about 3/4 up the gauge. Once it turns on, it just drops to normal after about 2 minutes
