one day my key would not turn. i went and got a used ignition switch unit with key. now the key turns but wont start up. a locksmith came out to look at it and said i have to reprogram whole system.

What makes this problem better or worse?

Yes, just because you got a key cylinder and key does not mean it is programmed to start the vehicle. The immobilizer system requires programming. See your local dealership or a repair shop that has the proprietary software and computer to do this.
