Particularly in the mornings or when the car is cold, moving the shifter is harder than it should be. Once the car warms up, no problems. Any suggestions?

If the shifter mechanism is freezing up, you will need to let it warm up. Try to let your car warm up for 10 or more minutes. it is also good for your motor and trans when it is near zero.
