Engine light came on shortly after refueling. Thought maybe the fuel. But noticed it starts much harder now.

It could be the wrong blend of fuel for the temperatures you are experiencing in SD causing a lean (not enough fuel) condition due to low volatility.. Also the gascap could be loose or leaking which could turn on the light. but that shouldn't affect starting. I suspect fuel quality. BTW, I recommend you have the key turnied OFF when you are fueling if you don't want to set a trouble code and put the light on for no good reason.
