The emission control message came up on dash. Can I do damage by keep driving?

I am out of town and the emission control message came up on dashboard. Called the local Acura dealer. Tech said the P0420 code is usually for catalytic converter. Sounds expensive. Can I keep driving the vehicle without doing any damage to engine or fuel systems?
