Ford Explorer loud howling noise from air intake possibly related to Idle Air Control Valve on Ford Explorer

Problem overview

Some Ford Explorer owners report experiencing a loud howling noise coming from the air intake, which can be intermittent and negatively impact engine performance. This issue is often linked to the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC), a common source of low-pitched moaning sounds in both V6 and V8 engines. If the IAC valve malfunctions, it can lead to these undesirable noises due to its role in controlling air volume during idling. Some owners find that cleaning the IAC valve with throttle body cleaner can help resolve the noise if it is caused by dirt or sticking. For newer Ford Explorers from 2004 onwards, the IAC has been replaced by an electronic throttle, and those experiencing whistling noises may benefit from cleaning the throttle body. Addressing these concerns promptly can help restore proper engine function and reduce noise.
