have no leaks, not dropping fluids. runs good on highway; overheats in stop and go traffic. is it the fan clutch and can i go without using fan clutch?

Sounds like a fan clutch indeed. Your stop and go traffic doesn't give you the air flow you need through the radiator. Therefore, the fan kicks in to help out. You cannot go without your fan clutch. With the engine off, check to see if it spins really freely, or if it's really tight. Either is a sign of failure.
You need to replace the thermostat. he part runs 120 to 200 at the parts store. I is located under the intake manifold on drivers side of the engine. 3 ea 8 mm bolts. To get to it take off the drivers side front wheel and lift the mud flap . You will see a black housing with a a wire in the center. Remove the wire, and the three bolts. The housing sensor and thermostat are all one piece. Also replace your anti freeze at the same time.
