On startup there is a loud noise from eng area- then goes away about 5 min later

It's difficult to give an answer on possible sources with knowing what kind of noise (grind, knock, buzz, rattle...) or hearing it ourselves. We have appointments available this week. I had a similar problem on my 2006 Lucerne but only on cold mornings. Took it to a shop and they replaced a black plastic cover over the bottom of he flywheel. But the noise was still there..disappearing as the engine warmed. So I crawled under the car and took off the plastic cover..about four bolts removed. Inspection showed that the cover was built with a slight curve that allowed the flywheel teeth to touch it and cause the noise. I could see that if the cover was straight and not curved across the "back" of the engine then it would give clearance for the flywheel teeth. I clamped that part of the part between two bars and heated the plastic with hot air till it softened and the let it cool and harden...now straight. Noise problem solved!
