The o/d light flashes. takes off slow and does not shift gears. Light did not come on until I replaced my battery because it was dead.My engine light does not come on though.

The O/D light flashing is telling you that there's a problem in the transmission or transmission control system. Get it checked, there should be diagnostic codes and data available.
