While in drive with the O/D on and in motion, at random times the O/D light flashes on and off and the engine sounds as if it is running extremely rough. I am usually doing about 40-45 mph at the time. When I stop and put it park and then in drive again, there are no problems. I would appreciate any and all responses.

sounds like your problem is only happening when transmission is shifting from second to third or third to OD. It is very possible the a shift solenoid is acting up or you may have some torque convertor shudder. Have someone scan the transmission for codes to see if it is a soleniod. check level, color and smell of transmission fluid. Low fluid level, brownish colored fluid could be as simple as changing transmission filter and fluid. Burnt smell is a indicator of problem with clutches or other internal problems. Shift solenoids are fairly cheap and can be done with a filter change easy fix. they also make a friction modifier for transmission shudder. Mr. Tranny has a good one for about $8.00
