NOISE WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES

If you have a noise when applying the brakes -- then it has to be something in the brakes, really. The pads may look thick enough, but may have issues with the pad surface to rotor mating surface. Inspect the pads closely, inspect the brake rotors closely for hot spots. Make sure all rattle clips are intact.
