Hello, That sounds like one of two things: the transmission has suffered damage, or the transmission position sensor (range sensor) is faulty. When you shift, the sensor on the transmission reads where you shifted and the transmission control module engages that drive range (R-N-D-3-2-1). If the sensor is worn out it will not report the position and the transmission control module will not operate that range. It really could be either, or even a separate issue all together, so have a transmission specialist take a look. Some do free diagnostics.
