Hello, The first place I'd look is the gas pedal. If raising the idle while in park causes the engine to cool back down, the water pump impellers may be worn down. We already know the radiator is working to some extend because the engine stays cool at all other times. I recommend flushing the cooling system, then inspecting for leaks. If no leaks, I would target the water pump. Think of it like a fan. If the blades are shorter, it has to spin faster to move the same amount of air. When water pump impellers deteriorate, the fan gets smaller.
I have a new thermostat, radiator, water pump, and timing belt. I have had the same problem for a couple years especially when it gets 90 degrees plus. Highway driving does regulate the engine temp and the AC blows very cold however at idle for more than 10 minutes or slow driving the engine will overheat. I have thought about putting an electric fan in front of the radiator similar to the one that is standard on Sequoias. Any of you had any experience with that?
