Mist coming out of front defrosters

I'm suspicious you have a leaking heater core and the mist and residue is engine coolant. The repair for this is to replace the heater core. If it's really the heater core leaking, it will get worse and soon you will have a puddle of coolant on the floor soaking the floormats.
