engine sputtered and stalled next day it was fine mechanic got a knock sensor code but the symtoms will not return

The knock code likely appeared during the sputter or stall if there was spark knock. It should do this. If the knock sensor or wiring failed it should not cause a sputter or stall. There is more info available when a code is set called freeze frame data that can be used to sort of reverse engineer the conditions during failure in hopes to reproduce. If that wasn't helpful, then communications with driver that experienced the problem about driving conditions (i.e. raining, sunny, engine cold or hot, up hill, down hill, leaving traffic light, passing on highway, a/c on, 25 people in trunk, happened just before mice jumped out, etc) is very helpful in reproduction efforts.
check your distributor for play and take a look at the bearings they disintigrate and will cause huge problems. if worn do not wait to replace doing so will cause the distributor to lock up and destroy the right cam. new distributor about $280 the cam distributor and labor is about $1,400 so dont wait. if the cam goes dont forget to replace the timing belt while you are at it. make sure you use all proper specs and instalation procedures, ie. timing points, 1st cylinder at tdc (top dead center) and ditributor at correct spline alignment otherwise you WILL destroy your engine.
