I recently had this happen on my automatic VW Golf, so I don't know if this is the same problem or not, but it may give you somewhere to start. When my car wouldn't shift out of park my boss was kind enough to dismantle the plastic casing/trim under the driver's side of the gear shift and he disengaged some sort of safety switch that allowed me to shift out of park. I'm sorry I can't be more specific about the steps he took. I just have to be extra careful because now the gears can be shifted while the car is turned off or without a foot on the brake (just like an older car anyway - and at least this way you can get it to your mechanic without paying a tow truck). Car has driven fine otherwise!
I just had the same problem, Under the Steering Wheel column there is a button, uscrew it and you will see a silver butoon, using a pen push the button in and then turn the key to on and off and it will come out, It worked for me
so do your key come out every time you put it in the ignition or do you have to keep pushing the button under the steering column. And also do your car start after you did that and one more thing do you have a 2005 Cadillac cts or do you have another make and model.
Thank God it's not the ecm the same thing happened to me today everybody on the forums was saying it was the ECM but it's not. Where it's shows the what gear your in like drive reverse park etc. push down that S button with the weird shape around. Push it hard even if you break it when I did this my key released and I could see all my fuel and temp gages I can take the key in and out the ignition now. I have to fix that part but I'm sure it is cheaper then replacing the ECM
I could not get key out, to turn all the way off, or all the way to start. Security light and brake light stayed on overnight draining battery completely. Key came out once car battery was connected to another car's battery, and car had power, but when I put key back in it got stuck again, and would not turn to start. Eventually, pressed on S Button next to shifter (sport mode button) and surprise, was able to turn key to start, dash lights came on, car started. No more problem getting key in or out! I'm guessing this is some kind of problem with the antitheft system. The problem originally occurred after bringing car to automatic high pressure car wash, then letting car sit in driveway for 1 week. I hope this helps other people! Thanks Uriah ak for your post above!
The battery died on my 2005 Cadillac STS this morning. I jumped the car but no luck. I get "security indicator" icon on the dash board. It means that "starting is disabled by a security feature". I've been told I will have to replace the battery and have a dealer reset the anti theft system. Is there a way to reset the anti-theft system without having to take it to a dealer? If so, how do I do it? I replaced the battery but no luck. Please don't waste money in replacing the battery. Follow the below instructions. It worked for me. I tried this procedure after towing to a local mechanic as he could not find any reason why it is not starting. 1. Put key into the ignition and turn it to the ON (RUN) position. A "Security" indicator light on the dashboard will stay on for 10 minutes & 10 Seconds. 2. Within 1 minute after the indicator light goes off, turn the ignition to "OFF" then return to the ON (RUN) position. The indicator light again will stay on for 10 minutes & 10 Seconds. (DO NOT REMOVE THE KEY) 3. Again, within 1 minute after the indicator light goes off, turn the ignition to "OFF", then return to the ON (RUN) position. The indicator light again will stay on for 10 minutes & 10 Seconds. (DO NOT REMOVE THE KEY) 4. When the light goes off for the third time, the new key is programmed into the computer. Remove the key and then re-insert it into the ignition lock and start the car. All previously stored codes will be erased. To stop the process at any time, simply remove the key and use an existing key to start the car. Note: I tried and after first 10 minutes & 10 seconds, ""Security" indicator light on the dashboard" did not go off, I removed the Negative terminal of the battery, waited for 15 minutes and then re-connected it back to battery. Now again i turned the key to "ON" position and within 5 seconds, security indicator light went away. I turned the key to Off position again and redo the same thing for two more times before i started the car. It started withing any message on Dash board. Good Luck.
