What is your question?
My "check engine" light was on for several days and took it to the dealership to have it checked. There were no performance problems noted. The dealership said that I needed my catalytic converter replaced and it would cost around $4000. They are checking to see if I still have a valid extended warranty. The "check engine" light remained on when I drove home but since then the "check engine" light is no longer on. Does this raise a doubt about the need for a new catalytic converter?

$4000.00? What was the code for the CEL light? If you still have a valid extended warranty, and it cost you nothing, then let them do it! If NO extended warranty and no problems with the car, highly suggest to get a 2nd opinion. (you should have a copy of the extended warranty).I don't own a Volvo, just an ole Truck with close to 350,000 miles on it and one of my converters rattled/broke loose inside(lost power and NO check engine light on). I went to a local, independent, trusted muffler shop and had mine installed, labor and parts included for $200.00,I'm happy!
Thank you for the info. As a girl, I guess they do not feel the need to share the code with me but I will ask for sure now.
You're welcome. when the check engine light or service engine soon light comes on,it will throw an engine code and when scanned with a scan tool or an OBDll code reader, then it will show the code, and it could be one or more of many things.(Autozone,Advance,O'reilly will do this for free)! I'm guessing, but your code was maybe a P0420,but even though lots of dealers/shops will tell you that your converter(s) need replacing,NOT TRUE! it could be an 02 sensor or wiring connection open/shorted/broken,or has as small as a vacuum leak. Suggest that you find a trusted, local, independent repair shop in NV and stick with them, because it sounds like the dealer thinks you must have a money tree at home because you have a Volvo! good luck with it.
