What is your question?
I know one of my catalytic converters is bad, how do I find out which one and how can I tell if my Catalytic converters are weld on or bolted on? Hi, I have a 2011 Honda Accord EX-L V6 My check engine light code comes back as " P0420" and "Catalyst system Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1), which so far as anyone can tell me means one of the four (two front and two rear) catalytic converters is clogged. I have an option of buying 8 types of parts, two front two rear and also, more importantly, welded on or bolted on. Which was referred to as "Universal" for the welded part or "Direct fit' for the bolted one. How can I tell not only which of the four is the clogged one, if not multiple, and whether it is welded or bolted, Universal or Direct fit?
What makes this problem better or worse?
For a minuet gas additives that increased octane helped it run cleaner, now nothing helps
How long has your 2011 Honda Accord had this problem?
months

Hi, this is Dusty; I'm one of the auto experts on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Hey there! So, you've got a 2011 Honda Accord EX-L V6, and you're dealing with a P0420 code, which points to Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). Bank 1 is the side nearest your vehicle's bulkhead (firewall). As for the clogging being the only reason for failure, that's technically a bit of a misnomer. Can they fail and clog? Yes, absolutely. However, there is a noticeable degradation of performance when that occurs. Can they fail and not clog? Yes, absolutely. The P0420 or P0430 means that the engine control module has determined that the converter is not working as well as it should. Many factors can influence those readings, so having a thorough diagnostic is the best course of action to avoid repeat, ineffective repairs. According to Honda's documentation, there are three catalysts, one on each exhaust manifold and a secondary unit further down the exhaust stream. The other components in the exhaust are likely to be resonators or mufflers. Given the complexity, having a professional confirm which catalytic converter is bad is the best action. That will ensure accurate identification, and they'll help you choose the right replacement, whether it is a universal (welded) or direct-fit (bolted) part. This way, you can get your Accord running smoothly again and stay compliant with emissions standards.
