I have heat going to and from my heater core through the hoses but the AC switch will not allow the heat to come on I am only getting cold air

My heat was working then it stopped working I felt the hoses going into the heater core the feeding line and the return line are both hot.But I do not have heat. When I turn the switch to windshield defrost switch the AC light comes on.
