tried an open faced oil filter wrench b ut i don't have enough room to get it to turn. i tried an oil filter cap but it started to strip the end of the filter. finnaly tried driving a screw driver through it but that only accomplished putting a hole in it big enough to put my thumb into

You're down to what I call the "last resort".Get yourself a nice sharp (peferably light)chisel and using a hammer drive the chisel into the base of the filter in the direction of rotation ,dont get carried away and start waiilng on it,but if you're patitient and keep at it you'll see it move ,then get another bite with chisel and continue process until loose enough to turn off with a wrench or by hand.
