Q: I cannot shift my car to reverse on 2006 Cadillac CTS

I tried to shift my car into reverse but I cannot. I noticed it getting harder and harder to shift for the last week and now I cannot shift it into reverse at all.

Are you saying it shifts but will not move or is hard to move the shifter? Does it shift into other gears ok and just reverse is the problem? If you cannot shift to reverse then you make it sound like will not move past reverse and go into any forward gears.
It sounds as if your shifter cable has gone bad. The cable is made up of many smaller strands that are twisted together. Some of those strands could be splayed out inside the sheathing, causing a hard to move shifter. If you have not had a problem stepping on the brake and moving the shifter out of park, your cable is the most likely the issue. If you are having a problem moving out of park, you have a shift lock problem. Check to see if your brake lamps are working, then listen for a click when stepping on the brake. The brake switch on the pedal operates the safety shift interlock switch that prevents you from shifting out of park without pressing the brake first. Check for power at the switch. If you have power, replace your brake switch.
