i have a 97 merc cougar and we changed the thermostat and now the heater core is gone causing smoke to come through the vents am i able to bypass the heater core without casing any problem to my cooling system

Yes you can. Just take the hoses off at the firewall side and couple the two hoses together. It will not effect the cooling of the engine.
