could overfilling the antifreeze/coolant after a recent radiator replacement cause head gasket to leak? does steel seal work on my gasket?

Over filling would not hurt your head gasket. Most likely, when the radiator wore out, it allowed the engine to over badly over heat. When I check out an engine that has run out of coolant, I do a Block Check to make sure that the head gasket is still intact.
