Q: Hardtop release on 1990 Mercedes-Benz 300SL

The hard top will not release at the windshield. Any ideas

First if the button is flashing slow (1 time/sec) that means YOU are doing something wrong(windowsnot syncronized, roll bar not lowered, or trunk lid open etc see owners maunal for OWNER malfunctions) if its flashing FAST (2x/sec) that means either the system is low on fluid or a contact switch is inop.. BUT take the tool with the 6 mm allen bit on the flat wrench type thing in the tool kit (or any 6 mm allen wrench , lower the visors and remove the little dime sized plugs that cover the windshiled latchrs release and turn each on till u see the top release then try the Top switch again . sometimes moving the switch back from open to close quickly will free up sticky solenoids and /or control valves. Have engine running when operating top. Do NOT turn key off during lowering /opening top as this will throw the ECU into a 'unknown switch status' mode that only locking down a hardtop manually with the special tool may be required to cure.. the 1990 SL's are problematic as only an time consuming 'breakout' box (mushroom) diagnosis be possible.. Remember this system likes to start from a easily definable status . Ive had nearly 100% success with starting with hardtop resting on latches ,ready to be pulled down by system. This seems to be the baseline for operation to commence

by the windshield you will see two small holds those are to realase the hard top
