What is your question?
My daughter came home and complained that the 98 Mazda 626, with about 121.000 miles on it, smelt like gas and as she was driving could watch the gas gauge go down. I started it up and saw gas pouring down like rain drops from the almost rear of the engine. I'm thinking that where the gas line connects to the fuel filter has failed and needs to be replaced. Could it be something else?

You'll need to visually inspect the fuel lines and see where the leak is coming from. It may be a loose clamp or a split hose, but no matter what it is, get it fixed before the vehicle catches fire!
You definitely need to have a Professional look at this problem There are too many things it could be to go over them 'online'. A Fuel System LEAK is a very dangerous thing to have, so have some one who knows EXACTLY what to do, deal with it. This is a safety issue!! Do not drive the car to the shop. TOW IT.
I went with Bretb's advice and had the thing towed to the shop. The hose from the tank to the engine had rotted, come off. Most of the cost is labor. Hard to get at. Thanks for the help.
