Gas gauge sensor on 2007 H3 Hummer won't allow me to put gas in tank.

very time I get gas I can't put the nozzle on automatic. I have to stand there and try to fill it manually. It will only take a few pennies at a time and then kicks off. Very frustrating and takes forever now just to get to the half way point. Bought a new gas cover thinking that was the problem but it isn't. Check engine light is now on constantly.
