Gas Gauge goes crazy when down to 1/4 full.

Ok everyone, I am new to this site but after running out of gas on the freeway, last week I need some in-put. I usually can trust my gas gauge all the way down to the last 18 miles but lately, whenever my gas gets to 1/4 tank or less... the gauge will go nuts. This morning the low fuel light was on and after sitting all day at work, it now says I almost have a full tank. I thought the gas fairy came. As I drove home,the needle crept slowly back down. Yes I made it to the station. Do I have a fuel pump problem or is it the gas gauge or what?
