fuel tank cap message came up, engine check light came on... replaced the cap , reset the check light still came back after the same message

Did you use a Volvo gas cap? If not, you should. You'll have to have the evaporative system checked out, there may be a leak in the system, or a defective sensor.

yes changed cap with one from dealer, was told to drive for a while ........ even went as far as clearing codes and that did not work
