I am having problems with starting the car. I smell gas fumes from underneath when I crank it. I let the car sit for 5 days with nightime temps in the teens (yes, stupid me) and now the car won't turn over. I put a bottle of "Heet" in the tank and that has not helped. How did I get the car started again?

Letting the vehicle sit for 5 days is not a problem, however smelling gas fumes is. You'll want to make sure you don't have a fuel leak, not only will this prevent the car from starting, it is very dangerous. When an engine cranks over but will not start, a few things need to be checked: 1. ignition spark at the spark plugs 2. fuel pressure to the injectors 3. fuel injectors are opening and closing properly 4. engine timing is correct, e.g timing belt has not skipped or broke.
The GA16DE engine has a timing chain, infrequent oil changes sometimes cause the hydraulic timing chain tensioner not to tension correctly causing the timing chain to slip and go out of time causing a no start condition. After that Bret's points are right, you need fuel injected into the engine (at the correct pressure) and spark arriving at the spark plugs at the correct time. These engines have an ignition distributor, remove the distributor cap and see if oil has contaminated the inside of the distributor cap, if the cap shows signs of oil inside the distributor has internal sealing problems and needs to be replaced. Oil inside the distributor conducts electricity or otherwise effects the correct distribution of the ignition spark.
