What is your question?
My new 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo flashed "shit into park" while driving at 55mph today on a four lane highway and basically went into neutral. I had no choice but to stop and shifted it into park and then tried to put it back in drive. It wouldn't go. I had to turn it off and then the shifter worked. This had only happened once, but I don't want it to happen again. Any thoughts welcome! Thank you!

Hi, it's likely advising some kind of fail safe mode to keep you safe since something in the engine performance is failing as you drive. Definitely see your dealer to have this looked at as soon as you are able. Best of luck.
Hi, I was wondering what happened here with your vehicle? I have the same 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and the same thing happened to me. It's quite terrifying given I commute 4 hours a day for my job in very heavy traffic. I've had multiple issues with this car already (all transmission related). It's at the dealership now and they've had a difficult time diagnosing the problem since no error codes are coming up other than something radio related. They concluded to change the inside gear shift since "sometimes in rare incidences paint gets on the wires during production and causes issues". I told them that answer was not satisfactory and gave me zero faith that the problem was resolved. Basically they have no idea what is wrong with my car. They now called and said they found a short in the wires under the inside gear shift. Odd that all of a sudden when I mention the car being a lemon they found the problem. In a nut shell, I'm not confident this dangerous issue has been resolved and was curious what your findings were. Thanks!
Any new developments on what caused this? I have a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland that did this twice over for the weekend. Luckily I was traveling at a low rate of speed. The repair shop can't duplicate the problem and no errors are being produced. Any insight would be helpful... Thanks!
Hi Everyone! I am trying to find out if you found any resolution for this. Sadly my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee has 2k miles. Purchased in Feb and has been in the shop 3 times for the same issue. Kinda scared to drive a this point. Is there a real fix?
Hi, After several weeks of trying to figure out the "shift to park" issue I was told it was a short of sorts in the wiring under my shift console. This was of course found after the service manager called me while basically googling what it could be. He told me "sometimes paint gets on the wires during manufacturing and causes these issues". I too was very terrified to drive my vehicle and refused to pick it up from the dealership. I commute 100 miles a day for work and need a safe vehicle to drive. Long story short and 10 months later my jeep was lemoned. Let me tell you, the process of lemoning was a nightmare. It has to start with the service department at the dealership and then gets approval from Chrysler. The main nightmare of lemoning is the third party Chrysler uses Stericycle. I opted to not hire an attorney but looking back at the amount of time it took and the headache it caused me I wish i would have. There is zero chance I would accept these issues if I were you. It really is terrifying when it happens. Hope this helps!
Thanks so much this response was super helpful. Ugh. So my nightmare will begin.
What is the process of declare your car lemon? MY 2016 Laredo is so scary. From valve problems to shift to park your car while driving.
As far as I know, the process has to start with the dealership's service department. They know the history of the car's repairs and ongoing issues. It's not easy to get them to start the process! For me, I refused to pick up my car after they told me it was fixed. I told them they needed to get the process started to declare my car a lemon because there have been too many transmission issues and this last problem was totally unsafe. I told them I paid for a safe and reliable vehicle and was terrified to drive what they sold me. I also drive over 100 miles a day to/from work so I had to get this made right. Eventually the higher-ups in the service department got more involved and got the ball rolling for me. The whole thing was a complete nightmare to be quite honest. Lasted over 9 months once the ball got rolling. I did not hire an attorney, but looking back at it I wish I had to save myself the headache. Best of luck! Hopefully this helps!
When I took my car in the shop they couldn't find any record of system errors and couldn't replicated the problem. Apparently, this is a known issue with Jeep but they have no recommended solutions. My case has been linked to a “Star†case which is what jeep calls their known issues or service requests. Good news is that it hasn't happened again. Knock on wood. When the flash into park happened, I had an oil change requires message that popped up a few days prior. My oil was no where near over due mileage or time wise and my oil percent was at 100. I figured my dealer forgot to reset the message so I ignored it. When my car freaked out, I assumed it was because of low oil. It in fact was not, my oil was perfect. The message was reset and I wonder if the issue has to do with that. My dealer also said our engines will shut off to preserve the engine if the oil is truely low. Even though it shouldn't have shut off, I wonder if there is a faulty wire or programming related to that part of of the car... fingers crossed I don't continue to have the issue but be sure my oil will be changed ahead of schedule.
I am having the same problem. It is so scary. I jad multiple issues already with my brand new laredo which I bought 0 miles in 2016. Now it only has less than 30,000 miles. The dealer refuse to fix my car bcs there is no light on.
My 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee has shifted into park while I'm driving twice. It's very scary! Luckily it has not done it while I was driving at a high rate of speed. The shifter and shifter screen showed the vehicle is in drive but it flashes across the screen where your speedometer is located, vehicle in park. The vehicle abruptly stops. I have tried shifting in and out of park back into drive but the vehicle will not move. The only thing I can do is turn the car off and back on. I brought it to the dealership last week and have not received word on anything. Very discouraging. I brought a brand new vehicle so we could have a safe and reliable car for our family. Honestly I'm fearful for our lives in the vehicle in its current condition.
Once more as I said previously: GET TO THE DEALER. DO NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER. A safety concern is a safety concern, period. Contact Fiat Chrysler FCA Customer assistance. Advocate for your concern. You should not buy a $30,000+ vehicle and drive "in fear".
Was anyone using a cell phone when the message displayed? I’m researching a possible issue for my parents.
Definitely take it to dealership asap the issue my car turned out to be a bad torque converter
mine started this yesterday, im at 260,176 miles on 2017 Laredo. First time, it went completely dead, lost all power and lights. last 2 times I got the 'ding' and Shift to Park Or Neutral Press Brake + Select Gear message but car stayed on with radio and lights. everything else died. all 3 times happened at intersection where i was stopped and started accelerating. any ideas?
2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driving 45mph, felt a slight jerk, then engine light pops on, 2 minutes later, alert pops up on dash saying shift vehicle into Park, and something about Trans. Car automatically shifted to neutral, rolled to side of road. Shifted to park, car stayed on, wouldn’t let me shift to drive. Shut vehicle down for 5 mins, turned back on, drove .5 mile happened again. Sat for 10 mins vehicle turned on shifted to drive and no issues at the moment. Called The dealership but they said they’re backed up with trans issues. Wondering if anyone figured out then actual issue. My car is a 2016 grand Cherokee, with 86k miles. Never had any issues prior.
Hi, I replied above as to what they found wrong with my 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude. Basically they could not find the problem with mine either. In the end I was told it was a short in the wiring under the shift console, but I had very limited confidence this was going to solve the issue given they were basically googling what it could be while I was on the phone explaining what happened and was told paint on wires can cause this. I wasn't buying it. I had 2 other transmission issues before this shift to park happened. I ended up telling them they needed to lemon my car. Hope this helps!
