What is your question?
2003 vw jetta 1.8 turbo; when accelerating up steep grades massive amounts of white smoke come from the exhaust (sometimes when it happens, I cannot even see the car behind me) but goes away when I stop accelerating. This is very embarrassing. Very rarely does this happen during normal driving. My mechanic has not been able to identify the problem. Any thoughts?

Your turbocharger seals have failed allowing oil into the exhaust stream. This is the typical symptom of a failing turbo. The repair consists of rebuilding the turbo with a "cartridge" which is the turbine, bearings and impeller as one piece. If the "cartridge" is not available or it's just not the way it's done on your car, then the turbo is replaced as a rebuilt unit. Sounds like burning oil, does it smoke when starting?
No, only when accelerating at high rpm's, and even then mostly when accelerating up hills. One more thing is that every now and then slight smoke comes from the hood, but only lasts a few seconds and then goes away. Are the 2 things related?
got a "guesstimate" on cartridge and rebuilt unit?
