My information shows a 4 cylinder engine with an electric cooling fan for that year Outlander. Some Mitsubishi V6 engines used a "viscous coupling mechanically drive cooling fan" that if it failed "locked up" would do exactly what you describe. Could you have a cracked exhaust manifold or restricted exhaust system? Is power out put down?
