Engine quit on highway like the ignition key turned off

(1998 BMW 750iL)
in Saint Louis, MO on December 07, 2010
this car has 2 fuel pumps and I took the fuel line off the fuel filter (before the filter) cranked the engine and no fuel come out of the line. I have checked the fuses to the pump and they are ok. If one pump quits do both shut down and if one fuel pump relay quits do both shut down? How or where do the relays get their power?

My knowledge tells me E65 only have one fuel pump. It is not very common for E65 fuel pumps to fail and if you mention the car shut off like you turned off your ignition, does this mean your electrical failed too. it is pretty common for a alternators to fail on these motors, leading to a system shutdown
