My car starts but the engine shuts off as soon as I take the foot off of the gas paddle.

The idle air control valve frequently gets carboned up with deposits. The Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) is located at the bottom side of the throttle housing just where the black rubber boot goes from the air filter housing to the throttle housing. Many Toyota dealers just replace the valve. I have disassembled the valve after removing the air duct and cleaned the IAC for our customers of the 40 or so I cleaned I only ever replaced two of them. I clean them and then I can test them using a scan tool with bidirectional controls but find an independent shop that specializes in Toyota or Lexus and ask them if the have experienced problems with the IAC, and do they clean or just replace the valves.
