Cruise control light comes on but the set light only flashes on for a split second and goes off. The cruise control does not engage at all no matter what I do. The car only has 9230 miles on it. I'm the second owner and an elderly lady bought it and left it in her garage.

It is time to look for wires chewed on by animals.
When vehicles are left in garages for periods and without use, mice like to live in them. They chew everything they can think to chew.
You may have a bad brake light switch as well, or the PCM or BCM could be preventing the vehicle from activating cruise control.
Lots of factors possible, but the first thing I would do is check for signs of animal habitation.

It depends on how many circuits are on the brake light switch. Some have a secondary circuit for cruise control canceling.
