Does one remove the cooling fan assembly from the top or the bottom of the car? Both alternatives look difficult. Thanks.

The service information I have shows the cooling fan assembly coming out from the bottom. You are correct, it looks difficult.
Probably a bit late..but I ran into this problem this weekend on an 04 Ion...you will need to raise front end, drive on ramps, whatever..then remove valance under radiator (plastic clips), then 6 bolts (13mm), 3 on each side holding radiator and AC condensor brackets...remove bolts, radiator and AC condensor then move just enough forward for fan and shroud to come out...BUT before raising FE release fan shroud clips..lift one side at a time before removing above mentioned bolts,also disconnect fan wiring before raising front end (save the actual plug going into fan motor til you get under the car... one of those jobs that once you have done it once, the second time would probably take 15 minutes...
