What is your question?
My check engine light is on so I had it diagnosed. The mechanic didn't give me the code but he says I have an air leak somewhere. It was at 12.5%. My s40 is burning more fuel than usual and I can smell fuel inside the cabin. I also have a hard start. Is my car falling apart? mileage is at 147500. Seems like I'm losing power also.

Sounds like a vacuum leak causing a lean condition that the computer is trying to compensate for and is making the fuel system run more rich, hence the smell and poor fuel mileage. Have it looked at by a qualified tech and go from there. I wonder why he would not give you the code? Was it a free code pull out of the computer?
Pulling the codes from the computer is not a diagnostic, codes are only a tool in the diagnostic prosses it just give the path to fallow. in most of cases the code fuel nothing to do with the problem my recomendation is to take it to a professional mechanic that you can trust. Vacuum leak can cause to set codes for oxygen sensor but it does not mean the sensor is bad, is just saying the mixiture is lean more air than fuel. condition were the computer trys to compensate for and is adding more fuel to the misxture making the fuel system run richer, cousing the smell and poor fuel mileage. Have it looked at by a qualified tech and go from there. Most shops it is free to pull codes out of the computer
Excellent answer from Leo's Auto Repair. Zee
yes it was free. He showed me on the little computer. I believe he said air leak trim model or something close to that if that helps. Will I need to replace the fuel pump?? I appreciate you help and time. :)
