If the Check Engine Light/Service Engine Soon light illuminates while you are driving, the car's on board computer sees a fault in the engines management system that is causing an excess amount of pollutants to be emitted from your car. This could result in engine damage if left neglected. Some problems that can cause the Check Engine light to stay on may take two "drive cycles' to complete before illuminating the Check Engine Light. The computer sees a problem and looks for an identical set of circumstances to occur to confirm that it has indeed seen a problem before turning on the light. A Check Engine light that continually flashes while you are driving is serious and is a sign that the computer sees a problem that seriously risks damaging the catalytic converter which may result in an expensive repair or even may cause a fire! Diagnostic codes are stored in the vehicle's computer and can be retrieved using a scantool that communicates with the computer in your car. We have in our Repairpal website an encyclopedia with in depth articles about computer, and computer control systems, emission and driveability problems. http://repairpal.com/check-engine-light
This may solve the symptons but maybe not the problem. My XL-7 did the same thing and I was told by a mechanic to disconnect the positive battery terminal for at least 30 seconds. What this does is clear any codes that have come up and resets everything. It's most likely an oxygen sensor(Iwas told) or it's time to have those sensors checked or changed if necessary. My vehicle spat and sputtered , I did what I was told and, after a few miles while the computer reset itself, there was no missing anymore. My check engine light came on again after that,1 or 2,000mi. maybe, but no missing. Mechanic hooked it up to engine analyzer and he said there were no problems and not to worry. He could have turned it off but odds were it would come back on because of the high mileage(sounds fishy to me too) but i've yet to have the missing occur. I bought my own code reader and no codes show up at all. After proper warm up, all systems check out and are performing as they should.
WHAT CODES EXPLAIN MORE PLEASE I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CARS
