At 41600 miles the check engine light came on--what does this mean?--should I be worried? Do I need to take it to the dealer right away?

Take it to the dealer they will hook it to a computer sensor and check it in seconds, free. Just tell them your in a hurry. Then make an appointment to get the repair done ASAP.
