This is not as daunting as it seems at first. I just did it, and saved a few dollars. First locate the air filter. If you are facing the front of the car, the air filter is located at the front of the engine compartment, on the left. It is housed in a conical-shaped plastic container that is held together by two metal clips, and is attached to the frame of the car with a single bolt. 1) Unscrew the bolt. The two halves of the housing won't come apart unless you take it off from the frame. 2) Unclip the two metal clips-- the two halves of the housing should start to separate. To get enough space to get the filter out, you may have to pry the two halves apart, but this is easy to do. 3) Remove old filter, and wipe down the housing (mine had a lot of dust in there). 4) Replace with new filter. 5) Reverse steps 1 and 2. It was surprising how hard it was for me to find a straight answer to this on the internet. But, from now on, I'm saving the cash, and doing it myself.
