The CEL light came on my '03 Vibe that has 118k miles. OBD code showed P0440. I reset it and it came back on after about 300 miles. Showed it to a shop who reset the light and told me to not worry about it as long as I could get more than 100 miles in between resets. No noticeable driveability problem, but I am wondering how long can I keep it driving it with this code and resetting it as it appears?

P0440 indicates a fault detected in the Evaporative Control (EVAP) system. This is a very general fault code. It could caused by a sticking EVAP solenoid, a leak in a EVAP line or even the gascap being left too loose or leaking. Also, leaving the ignition key on while fueling could set that code. If you want to listen to the radio while fueling, have the key in the accessory (ACC) position, not in the ignition on (RUN or ON) position.
