What is your question?
Hi, My 2000 Mazda Protege runs seemingly fine, 75 mph, ok on gas. I happen to know that the front cat converter has melted. I've replaced the rear CC (which was filled with pieces of the front), but the front one is expensive no matter where I do it and I'm on a monk's budget. Since the car is running OK and I'm not due for an inspection for another year, do I need to replace it now? What are the risks? Thanks again...

The risks are if the cat converter melts it will restrict exhaust exiting the engine and cause a loss of power even to the point where it will stop running. The cat converter can over heat and cause a fire worse case scenario. It is expensive, here in California you must replace with OE type catalytic converters. Have you tried a muffler shop to see what they would charge for a generic cat converter? The trouble with generic cats is you get what you pay for. Check Engine Light may come on for low cat efficiency P0420.
