Car wouldn't start, I thought the battery was dead but then dashboard

instruments began to come on serially, power locks turned on and off by themselves. I attempted to restart the car but nothing happened, I went to remove the key but it wouldn't release. I waited awhile and the dashboard lights and power locks repeated the previous pattern and I was able to remove the key. there was never a problem prior to this, car was working perfectly.
