car will not go into any gear when i try to put in gear it knocks and wont move

Hello, What sensations do you feel throughout the vehicle, shifter, steering wheel, and floorboard when you put the vehicle into gear? Does the knock sound like a slow knock, knock, knock, or is it more like a fast thump noise? With the vehicle off, can you get it into gear?
