What is your question?
This started to happen two days ago. The car will sometimes start up fine and in about a minute a horrible squeaking sound starts. It is very high-pitched and a little embarrasing. It goes on and off. It will pass in less than a minute run fine and start again if I'm idle. I took the car to one mechanic and he told me he needed a Harmonic Balancer and to change the alternator. While the parts were not available and had to be ordered I drove it into another mechanic's shop as the sound was happening and he said it needed a new fan belt and tensioner. Who is right. Are these connected because it sounds like very different diagnosis. Should I go to a third mechanic. Yes I am a young woman.

I would say tech #2 is correct. The way to check this is use a 14 mm wrench and check the tensioner might repeat the sounds. can use a scope like a doctor to isolate the noises. The tensioner wears out about 50k miles. The shell is mostlikely coming loose from the ring. these cars dont have a fan belt though. he probally ment serp. belt. hope that helps
