Hello,
Are you certain the tail-lights are coming on? How can you tell?
The brake light switch is probably out of adjustment, missing, or bad.
When you press the brakes, the brake pedal moves away from the brake light switch, causing the brake lights to illuminate.
If the switch is bad, they will stay on.
Look at the lever for the brake pedal, and see if it is contacting the brake light switch. You will know the brake light switch because it is the only button that the brake pedal lever touches/presses.
If the lights go out when you press the switch, readjust, if not, test the switch.
It should not have continuity when the button is pressed, but should have continuity when the button is released.
